The Rollright Stones, recently…
© Heritage Action
Too close, too intrusive and (so far as we know) not even based on any previous tradition there, in fact only started recently. Yet obviously expanding and being added to constantly by a proportion of visitors and set to become a permanent feature.
And not even all biodegradable – how (un)caring for ancient sites and other people is that? And what sort of motivation leads someone to hang up a receipt from a local organic restaurant?! Targeted advertising?

I was pleased to speak to the on-duty warden at the weekend, who said she’d spent some time clearing the tree, and would be discouraging others from repeating the effect.
Sadly, I also saw that the Whispering Knights were being used as a ‘wishing well’, with a *lot* of coins thrown and left on the stones. This could damage the fragile lichen, or even chip the stones but the coins were apparently just left there. This only encourages others to join in the practice. The coins should also be removed as quickly as possible, and the practice dissuaded.
