In an impressively clear and no-nonsense statement English Heritage and the National Trust appear to have kicked the debate into touch for at least a generation.
Request refused.
“The vast majority of the England adult population support museums that wish to display and keep human bones for research purposes”

Excellent responses to the decision by the National Trust and English Heritage to refuse the request for reburial can be found on the websites of the British Druid Order at http://www.druidry.co.uk/death&reburial.html and Honouring the Ancient Dead.

In the spirit of impartiality, this is the HAD link that outlines their response to the Avebury consultation…

And our article (and there has been a few more) from February 2009…issue-of-reburial-at-avebury.

Thanks for the the HAD link heritage action.
Many of the issues discussed in your link are addressed in my response and also in HADs, although I assume no authority to speak on their behalf. One of my main gripes with the refusal to rebury was the basis of the framework with which we were working with. If NT and EH were defending a right to retain by asking us to conform to standards set within the DCMS guidance, it is only fair the museum also work to the same standard. If Im unable to scientifically prove a cultural or spiritual link with an unknown past, neither can the museum. This criteria simply supports museums and denies reburial before requests are even lodged. To focus on the size of a group rather than the quality of the idea like NT EH, is not impartial but prejudiced. Doesnt matter if our group consisted of 6 individuals or 6 million people. The link to our response explains the rest. I personally think that the way forward for everyone is to focus upon the section of our response ‘Conclusion’ and the areas of agreement. The rest should them fall into place. I trust HAD, BDO and other groups with a balanced focus will be able to find harmony where confusion exists. Oddie /|\ Independent and free Druid 🙂
