We were intrigued to see this scary notice where we parked to visit the West Kennet Long Barrow yesterday…
especially as it needs amateurs, not the official site guardians, to think it is worth putting this very gentle request on the path leading up to the monument…
So which one is it more important to keep litter-free National Trust – West Kennet Long Barrow or its lay-by? If you think the former perhaps you could refrain from removing the amateur notice (which reflects the ASLaN charter, which we know you agree with) until you have replaced it with one of your own. Thanks!

It is outrageous all the litter that people leave. Only today, an empty drinks carton was discarded from a car window on a road passing a wonderful monument. It is about time the goverment and Police started to wage war against litter leaver, especially those that choose to visit ancient sites and leave rubbish strewn all over the place. Why not make it a very serious offence to litter anywhere within an area in and around a Heritage site. How about £500 and with the money raised, place wardens in and around these Heritage sites to ensure they stay protected?

Litter- eurgh, disgusting!!
Monument wardens would be a great idea if only it was practical. It would be good to have designated monument wardens patrolling in vans and visiting all ancient monuments in an area and litter picking and giving out on the spot fines (£100?) to offenders and where needed, getting the back up of the Police. Why should an ancient monument be any different from any other public amenity such as a municipal park?
Sadly, monuments, seem to attract the ‘new agey’ stone hugging hippy types who think that taking drugs, whilst watching the sunset and supping on a special brew is a fitting way to celebrate our Heritage. Has anyone seen the amount of beer cans and roach ends around many ancient sites- It is both truly horrible and ILLEGAL!!.
