Heritage Action’s Essex Group will be holding a Minimeet on Saturday, 27 of August at the Viper, Mill Green, Essex. The Viper is one of Essex’s many little gems pub-wise; it’s set all alone in woodland, serves real ale, excellent food and hosts a little beer festival over the August Bank Holiday (Jake the Snake is the pub’s resident tipple but there are other goodies on tap during the festival).

Ingatestone is only about fifteen minutes’ drive from the Viper so something to see stone-wise on the way there or on the way back. The Church of St Mary with St Leonard in Broomfield, Chelmsford (with its amazing puddingstone) is not far away, and the Chapel of St Peter-on-the-Wall at Bradwell-on-Sea is within striking distance for the early starter.

We get together around noon on the day so come along if you fancy meeting up with likeminded folks (look out for a Heritage Action poster on one of the tables or someone wearing a HA t-shirt).

We featured the fascinating long barrow of Belas Knap some time ago – see here – but a recent video of a visit by Mark Horton gives a fuller flavour of just how arresting it is.

(Please adjust your volume!).
