Good news from This is Cornwall

Solution to Protect Stones is offered.

RECOMMENDATIONS for the future of cattle grazing on an ancient stone circle on Penwith Moors will be made by the end of the month, says the body responsible for its protection.

Following showdown talks held at Tregeseal stone circle last week, English Heritage hopes to come up with a solution to stop the stones becoming loose or dislodged.

Some groups, including Save Penwith Moors, believe the only way to protect the stones is to ban cattle grazing on the site as permitted by Natural England in 2009.

Other factors, such as dry weather causing the ground to shrink and damage caused by visitors have also been cited.

Nick Russell, assistant inspector of Ancient Monuments at English Heritage, said he would be making recommendations by the end of the month. He said: “We had a very constructive meeting with all interested parties. We understand Save Penwith Moors’ position and will take that into account when making our decision.”

Although English Heritage only has the power to make recommendations on the future of cattle grazing, Mr Russell added he hopes to secure a method of stabilisation for the loosest stones on the site.
