Aberdeen: Volunteer diggers required!

An opportunity has arisen  for first time diggers to get involved in a community project, excavating Tullos Hill in Aberdeen.

The hill has long been known as an important archaeological site because of the four Bronze Age burial cairns there: Cat Cairn; Baron’s Cairn; Crab’s Cairn; and Tullos Cairn,  all of which are scheduled sites. In total over 150 archaeological sites, from the prehistoric to WWII have been identified on the hill so far.

A previous community excavation in 2010 was well attended by budding archaeologists, and volunteers are now being sought for another season of excavation work planned for August 22 to September 4, including weekends. For visitors, there will be an organised open day on Saturday, September 1 from 10am-4pm when there will be opportunities to dig and take part on guided walks of the historical sites on Tullos Hill.
