Richard Hebditch the National Trust’s External Affairs Director has just said:
“We’re disappointed that the Committee [the High Speed Rail Bill Select Committee] already seems to be ruling out a long tunnel under the Chilterns. Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty have that designation because of their importance to the nation. As the nation’s biggest infrastructure project for decades, the HS2 project should have the best mitigation for its route through the AONB. In our view, that means a fully bored tunnel. We hope that the Committee will think again on this when they hear from individual petitioners in the coming months.”
Whereas at Stonehenge?

Maybe a footpath along the A road passing Stonehenge. I had to re-trace cross country back to Durrington Walls, as there is no path at all along that A road. Resume some farming land (can this be done?) and make a footpath about 5-6 metres wide with a painted strip down the middle). Maybe carparks on same side of road about a kilometre away or more (ie out of sight)- is it pie in the sky that many visitors would then walk along the A road and traffic might be lighter? Turns not an issue then as the through traffic might be those who’ve seen it all before ….. only buses, disabled and seniors (I am a senior, but would rather do the walk cross-country) to use the present car park at Stonehenge.
