It’s a puzzle why the Scientific Committee to advise on the impact of the Stonehenge tunnel project on the Outstanding Universal Value of the World Heritage Site has been set up at the request of the Highway’s Agency. Would not UNESCO be a more appropriate body, given that Stonehenge has outstanding universal value to humanity as a whole?

It’s also a puzzle that Sir Barry Cunliffe has been invited to be the Chairman. Many will be surprised that he didn’t write back declining the invitation with the terse message:.

Why might people be surprised? Because those are the very words he used in December 2014 in a joint open letter to the UK government objecting to proposed housing adjacent to Oswestry Hill Fort.
