Perhaps the Government and its pro-tunnel allies thought it was in the bag and that rhetoric about skylarks and enhancement, capped with a deliberate dismissal of the opposition of UNESCO and the Government’s OWN appointed independent experts would be enough. They must now be shocked that within 24 hours of the launch of a Stonehenge defence fund, 860 people have contributed £22,880 and the total is set to exceed the first target sum of £25,000 at an astonishing speed.
What can be deduced is this: Stonehenge and its free view are the Public’s, the World Public’s, not the Government’s or its allies and they have no right to steal it. Let English Heritage, Highways England, The National Trust and all the pro-tunnel archaeologists who subtly implied the Public didn’t really understand realise they clearly DO, and they care! You can bet they will still fight hard and expensively to get their way so please continue to give as much as you can so that whatever happens ample funds will be available to fight this dreadful assault on World Heritage.
