Whiff 1: UNESCO says a 1.8 mile tunnel “remains inadequate to protect the outstanding universal value of the site” but the Government says no, it’s adequate, and indeed any longer would be “unaffordable”. But here’s the thing: why mention a longer one is unaffordable if the shorter one is adequate?

.

Whiff 2: English Heritage, Historic England and the Trust also say a short tunnel is adequate as it will “enhance” the site. But here’s thing with that: why wouldn’t bodies committed to doing their very best for the site not say to the public that: a longer one would be EVEN MORE of an enhancement?

.

Whiff 3: The Government is currently building 64 miles of tunnels for HS2 just between London and Birmingham, (including a 10 mile one under the Chilterns!). But here’s the thing about that: How can a tunnel longer than 1.8 miles therefore be “unaffordable” at Stonehenge?
