The crux of the problem with metal detecting.

The Portable Antiquities Scheme tells archaeologists, the public, the media, landowners and the Government that this behaviour is uncommon. Yet it has no evidence that it’s true. Ask it. In fact, the evidence is inarguable: the number of finds reported per detectorist is derisory and shrinking annually. Ask it about that, too.
