A Dalek bin has been unveiled to tackle the litter problem in the Wiltshire village of Aldbourne – (not at Avebury as we previously reported. Sorry!)
It comes complete with a “Do Not Press” button which plays the message “exterminate, exterminate” when pushed. “It has been extremely difficult to make,” said its creator, mechanic Tim Beattie, “But I think that’s it – I’m not going to make any more Dr Who bins.”
We can confirm that there are NO plan to place Dalek bins in Avebury and particularly not on the access path leading up to West Kennet Long Barrow …

The BBC article. “The Dalek bin has been positioned outside The Crown pub in the centre of the village.” That’s in Aldbourne, not Avebury.

Thanks Keith. Goodness knows how that happened, we had understood the Tardis one was at Aldbourne and the Dalek was at Avebury. (We’ve amended it now.)

Quite right – Tim did a great job making the Tardis (with the help of some of our young people in the village) and the new dalek. If you would like to read more please visit http://aldbourne.net/news/archived/exterminating-rubbish
Mind you, a dalek on the access to West Kennet would have made a great photo!
With best wishes to the Heritage Journal from the Aldbourne Archive

Nice people those Dabchicks (Aldbourne folk). Whenever that episode of Dr Who gets a mention it rarely states that the idea for the story was anchored in Atkinson and his excavation of Silbury, I wonder why that is?

That is an interesting connection and I’ll make sure that something gets added to the parish magazine, website and archive FB page – thanks Brian!

l made the dalek and tardis bins, and am pleased to say they work well.I do think any buisness in a village with a wheely bin could look after a novelty bin and empty it when full,as l do.Council bins dont look nice and are often emptied after they are over flowing with rubish. In my opinion this idea could work well any where. Tim .
